Why Barbeque
Safari? The traditional definition of
safari is an overland journey, usually a big game hunt. Our safari is a big game hunt...the hunt for
good “que”. For us it has been a good
excuse for a weekly road trip, plus we always try to find good barbeque
whenever we are on a trip for other reasons.
We don't claim to be experts on barbeque, but we thought that other “Que
Hunters” might be interested in what we find.
What with the
economy being in the state it is we probably won't be traveling to some the
best regional “que” hunting grounds as much as we would like, but we try. Since we live in Southern California most of
our hunting will be done in this area.
If you have found a favorite “que” hunting ground, let us know.
Even
California has a regional specialty, tri-tip.
It originated in the Central Coast and Central Valley areas of the
state. Some of the best tri-tip can be
found at weekend barbeques, set up in parking lots for church or fraternal
order fund raisers in the Santa Maria area.
If a barbeque establishment has tri-tip on the menu, I will be sure to
try it. I am also a fan of Memphis style
pulled pork which I had the pleasure of sampling on a trip some years back. My wife loves ribs especially baby back ribs
and is a fan of Texas style barbeque.
And, then there are the sides. We
definitely have our preferences in sides and we compare those too.
We do have
our standards. I'll give those of you
who live in the Los Angeles area or have visited the San Fernando Valley a
hint. Mom's Bar-B-Q House is right down
the street...
We'll rate
our finds on a 10 point scale with 1 being “Don't Bother” to 10 being “Big Game
Barbeque”.
Since you
know what we are about, let's start with the first hunt.
